What to Expect Before, During, & After Joint Replacement Surgery

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

People who are considering a hip or knee replacement often have many questions about what to expect before, during, and after a joint replacement surgery. These are just some of the basics to be aware of:

Before Surgery:

You will be required to have a medical clearance from within the last thirty days. You may potentially also need:

  • Dental clearance

  • CT scan

  • Pre-schedule physical therapy

During Surgery:

Most knee and hip replacements take an average of 1-2 hours, once surgery begins. Typically, you will have general or spinal anesthesia administered during this time.

After Surgery:

After your surgery is complete, you will begin walking as soon as possible. Most patients are able to return home the same-day or the day after surgery. Showers are allowed starting the day after surgery, but you should avoid pools and hot tubs for at least three weeks.

Typical medications you may be instructed to take are:

  • acetaminophen

  • anti-inflammatories

  • prescription painkillers

  • anticoagulants

You should plan for assistance with transportation for several weeks. You will not be cleared to drive immediately after surgery.
